$145 a workshop hour 000-000-0000

Four numbers, and everything else is arithmetic

Rates

There are four hourly rates and one parts rule. Every figure anywhere on this website is one of those four multiplied by a number of hours, and both numbers are printed against every job.

  • $145 workshop · $185 on site
  • $125 bench · $265 after hours
  • Parts at cost plus 20 per cent

On-site hour

$185an hour

An hour where the equipment travelled. Trucks and machinery are seen where they stand, and travel inside twenty-five miles of Goshen is in this rate rather than added to it.

  • The diagnostic hour is agreed before it starts
  • Under fifteen minutes to fix means it happens inside that hour
  • Parts at cost plus 20 per cent, both figures on the invoice
  • Thirty days on any repair we made

Bench hour

$125an hour

Electronics work under a microscope, on a control unit that came off the vehicle. The cheapest of the four, because nothing had to move and because the alternative is usually buying a new unit.

  • The diagnostic hour is agreed before it starts
  • Under fifteen minutes to fix means it happens inside that hour
  • Parts at cost plus 20 per cent, both figures on the invoice
  • Thirty days on any repair we made

After-hours on-site hour

$265an hour

Evenings and weekends in harvest, for machinery standing in a field. Published rather than negotiated at the gate at nine at night, which is the only honest way to have this rate.

  • The diagnostic hour is agreed before it starts
  • Under fifteen minutes to fix means it happens inside that hour
  • Parts at cost plus 20 per cent, both figures on the invoice
  • Thirty days on any repair we made

Every figure on this site is an hourly rate multiplied by a number of hours, and both numbers are printed. A workshop hour is $145, an on-site hour is $185, a bench hour is $125 and an after-hours on-site hour is $265. Parts are at cost plus twenty per cent with both figures on the invoice. There is nothing else: no callout fee on top, no shop supplies percentage, no environmental levy.

What is in the rate and what is not

Travel

Inside twenty-five miles of Goshen it is in the on-site rate rather than added to it. Beyond that the road time is charged at the WORKSHOP rate rather than the on-site one, which is the cheaper of the two honest ways to do it.

The towns that are inside it

Parts

At what they cost us plus 20 per cent, and the invoice prints both figures. Publishing a mark-up is unusual in this trade, and the reason customers assume the worst is that almost nobody does.

Why that number is on the page

The minimum

On site, one hour. A twenty-minute job forty minutes away is an hour of somebody's day whatever the clock says, and pretending otherwise would mean loading it back onto the parts.

In the workshop there is no minimum beyond the diagnostic hour itself.

The whole rate card

Every job, with its hours and its labour figure

Nothing in this table is a figure anybody typed. Each one is the published rate for where the work happens, multiplied by the hours beside it.

Every job on this workshop's rate card, with the hours, the rate it is charged at, the turnaround and the labour figure. Nothing here is a figure we typed: each one is the published rate multiplied by the hours. Parts are separate, at cost plus 20 per cent, with both numbers on the invoice. A job that can be done in the workshop or on site is listed at the workshop hour. Done where the vehicle stands rather than here, the same hours are at the on-site hour, $185.

The one thing bought in advance

A pre-season agreement

Three machines or more at one address, checked between January and April, at a fixed price each. Anything found is quoted before it is done, and the report is written so it can be handed to somebody else.

What it costs and why it is less

  • Per machine, three or more at one addresstwo hours$320
  • The same two hours bought singlyon-site hour$370
  • The difference, which is one trip rather than threeper machine$50

It is cheaper because the van goes to one address once. It is not a loyalty discount and it is not a discount for buying more, and if it were either of those we would not be able to show you the arithmetic.

Booked January to April. Anything found is quoted before it is done, and the report is written so it can be handed to somebody else — an insurer, a dealer, or whoever buys the machine in four years.

What we will not do to a price

  • Quote a repair over the telephone for a vehicle nobody has seen. That is a guess with a number on it, and a guess with a number on it is worse than no number.
  • Add a shop supplies percentage, an environmental levy or a callout fee on top of the hour. There are four rates and a parts rule, and that is the whole of it.
  • Charge diagnostic time twice on the same fault. If the repair follows straight on, the hour that found it is the hour that found it.
  • Take a rebate, commission or bonus from a supplier for fitting one brand rather than another.

Parts are at cost plus a published percentage. Parts are charged at what they cost us plus twenty per cent, and the invoice shows both numbers. We take no rebate, commission or bonus from any supplier for fitting one brand rather than another, and no manufacturer is named anywhere on this website.

Why any of this is on a website at all

Questions about money

What does it cost to find out what is wrong?

One hour, charged at the rate for where it happens: $145 in the workshop, $185 on site, $125 on the bench for a control unit. That hour is measurement rather than guessing, and at the end of it you get what was measured and what it would cost to put right, in writing. If the fix takes under fifteen minutes it happens inside the hour and there is nothing more to pay.

Why do you charge for diagnosis when the garage down the road does not?

Because somebody pays for it either way. A workshop that does not charge for looking has to recover the time in the parts it sells, which is why free diagnosis so often arrives with a part attached to it. The hour is published, and you can take the written result somewhere else.

How far do you travel?

Twenty-five miles from Goshen carries no travel charge. Beyond that the road time is charged at the workshop rate rather than the on-site rate, which is the cheaper of the two honest ways to do it. The service area page lists the towns we reach before nine o'clock.

What happens in harvest?

From mid-July to the end of October one of us is on call in the evenings and at weekends for machinery standing in a field, at the published after-hours rate. It is a real arrangement rather than a promise to answer any telephone at any hour, which a workshop of five people cannot honestly make.

How do you charge for parts?

At what they cost us plus twenty per cent, and the invoice shows both numbers. We take no rebate, commission or bonus from any supplier for fitting one brand rather than another.

Labour from $125 · every figure is a rate times hours

Describe the symptom, or just telephone

The symptom check takes about three minutes and gives you a written summary of which circuits would be tested first and why, with the hours and the published rate against each. It is an indicative scope and not a diagnosis — nobody has seen the vehicle — but it is a better opening than a blank contact form. If you would rather skip it, the telephone works.
