From the middle of July to the end of October one of us is on call in the evenings and at weekends for machinery that is standing in a field. That is a harvest arrangement and it is charged at the after-hours rate, which is published like everything else.

Getting here

  • Hatfield Lane runs off Route 17M on the Middletown side of Goshen; the unit is at the far end of the yard
  • Ten minutes from Exit 124 of Route 17, which is why most of the truck work comes from that corridor
  • Forty minutes from Newburgh, an hour from the Delaware, and an hour and a half from the George Washington Bridge
  • The yard takes a tractor unit and a trailer, and a low-loader can turn in it
  • There is hard standing outside the door for two machines waiting on parts

Dropping a control unit in

Quite a few of the modules on the bench arrive on their own rather than in a vehicle, and a fair number of those come from other workshops. If you are posting one, put a note in the box with the vehicle, the symptom and a telephone number, and pack it so that the connector header is not what the parcel lands on.

The assessment is one bench hour and it comes off the repair if you go ahead. There is no charge for saying no to a repair, and about one unit in five gets a written no.

Accessibility

  • Level access from the yard into the workshop, with no step at the door
  • Hard standing outside the door, and the yard is flat
  • No customer waiting area, which is the honest answer and part of the reason most work is collection or on site
  • No accessible toilet on the premises, which is why we will come to you if that matters

Describe the symptom, or just telephone

The symptom check takes about three minutes and gives you a written summary of which circuits would be tested first and why, with the hours and the published rate against each. It is an indicative scope and not a diagnosis — nobody has seen the vehicle — but it is a better opening than a blank contact form. If you would rather skip it, the telephone works.
